Electronics Weekly News | August 18–24, 2025

Last week, the semiconductor industry witnessed major developments across automotive electronics, edge AI, optical networking, global trade policy, and chip supply dynamics. Below is a roundup of the key updates.

Infineon Finalizes Acquisition of Marvell’s Automotive Ethernet Business

Infineon completed its $2.5 billion acquisition of Marvell’s Brightlane Automotive Ethernet portfolio, consolidating expertise into a new “Ethernet Solutions” unit. The move strengthens Infineon’s position in software-defined vehicles, with Ethernet PHYs, switches, and bridges enabling secure, high-performance in-vehicle networking up to 10 Gbps. The business carries a $4 billion design-win pipeline by 2030.

U.S. and EU Seal Trade Framework With Semiconductor Tariffs Up to 15%

The U.S. and European Union finalized a trade framework covering multiple sectors, including semiconductors. Under the agreement, tariffs on EU-origin chips and electronics will be capped at 15% starting September 1, 2025. Analysts note that while the framework reduces uncertainty, tariff barriers may continue to influence global supply chain realignment.

Optical Transport Market Rebounds With 14% YoY Growth

Dell’Oro reported that the optical transport equipment market rose 14% in Q2 2025, led by demand for disaggregated WDM systems and data center interconnect (DCI). Cloud providers drove a 60% YoY increase in WDM purchases, while ZR/ZR+ pluggable optics also outperformed expectations. Vendors including Huawei, Ciena, Nokia, ZTE, FiberHome, and Cisco captured the top revenue shares.

Nvidia Cancels H20 Production Amid Regulatory Challenges

Nvidia has halted production of its H20 AI chips originally designed for the China market, citing regulatory hurdles and order cancellations. The company disclosed $4.5 billion in direct financial losses and projected $8 billion in potential revenue shortfall. While U.S. regulators recently granted limited export approval under a 15% revenue-sharing condition, ongoing security reviews in China are constraining sales recovery.

New SMARC Compute Modules Expand Edge AI Options

Advantech, Tria Technologies, and Aaeon unveiled new SMARC-compliant compute modules based on NXP, Renesas, and MediaTek platforms. These modules integrate AI acceleration, advanced multimedia, and deterministic control in compact 82 x 50 mm form factors. Designed for HMI and industrial edge applications, the boards provide developers with scalable, power-efficient solutions for embedded AI workloads.

Novosense Launches 3D Dual-Output Hall Latches for Automotive Motor Control

Novosense introduced its MT73xx family of 3D dual-output Hall latches, enabling measurement of both motor speed and direction in a single chip. With Vertical Hall Sensor (VHS) technology, the device supports multiple magnetic field orientations, reducing system complexity and cost for automotive OEMs. Rated to AEC-Q100 Grade 0 (-40°C to +150°C), the MT73xx provides robust performance for next-generation electrified vehicle platforms.

Toshiba Introduces Compact 1,500V Photo-Relay for EV Batteries

Toshiba launched the TLX9161T photo-relay in an 8 x 10 mm SO12L-T package, designed for electric vehicle battery management and fault detection. Rated for 1.5 kV and compliant with AEC-Q101 Grade 1, the relay offers fast switching (≤1 ms), high isolation (5 kVrms), and reduced PCB footprint compared to prior generations.

Outlook

The semiconductor industry continues to balance innovation with supply and policy pressures. Automotive sensing and networking, AI acceleration at the edge, and optical connectivity remain strong growth drivers. At the same time, tariff frameworks and export controls highlight ongoing geopolitical complexities.
